Your Road To Leisure

In the past, working hours were determined by the locking of the factory gates. Now, changes in technology mean that we take the factory home with us, allowing work to invade every waking hour. This phenomenon is what we call Hyperemployment. Leisure time is in decline, and even what we would call leisure activities, are being used for someone else’s profit.

Complete our three step consultation process to discover how Hyperemployed you are. Our dedicated staff wil then use the results of this consultation to help you reclaim your right to leisure time.

1. Dayline

Throughout our day, work permeates leisure and vice versa. To help us understand the extent of your Hyperemployment, create your own Dayline.
Use the coloured post-its to divide the hours of a regular weekday into work and leisure; Yellow is for work and blue is for leisure. Every post-it counts for one hour.

2. Multi Task

The endless, constant fl ow of email, notifications, direct messages, favourites and invitations are fighting for our attention. We are constantly distracted, both during working hours and leisure time. In order to better understand your condition.
We ask you to complete the Multi Task. Your job is to immediately reply to incoming messages whilst completing the survey provided. Your results will be monitored and recorded as part of the consultation. You have three minutes.

3. Data Accountant Service

Even during leisure time we are working. The online activities we think of as leisure, for example hanging out on Facebook or watching Youtube videos, are a form of labour. These companies function because of the content that their users produce:
“If you’re not paying for the product, you are the product” - Anon.
Instructions:
Fill in the invoices provided to find out how much your leisure activities are worth and how much you are owed for the work you have done during your leisure time.

Leisure

You have now reached the final destination
on YOUR ROAD TO LEISURE. One of our consultants will be with you shortly to deliver your prescription.

Welcome to Leisure.

Archiving The Intangible

(Preview of the paper takes a while to load)

The video and paper above are the result of the 'Embodied Interaction' course that has just ended. The Embodied Interaction course was quite art related, but also addressed a lot of technical and programming aspects. The brief of the course was to archive the intangible, with the focus (more or less) on memory. Our group decided to work with fear and the memories related to fear.
The paper describes the theoretical grounding, the concept and the construction of an embodied interactive installation about fear. The processes in the brain when exposed to fear, the memories related to it and the triggering of these memories are taken as a starting point. The goal of the installation is to give people more insight in the subject of fear, by offering them an interactive experience which is based on the archiving and retrieving of emotions and sounds related to the subject.

The installation will be used for the Living Archives convention on the 25th and 26th of February.

My paper will be sent in for the SIDeR 2015 conference in Denmark, to represent the installation of our group.

Small Arduino tests

We've started working on small Arduino projects, tutored by one of the founders of Arduino.

This is a small game made by using an Arduino board, 3 sentiometers, Arduino software and Processing.

Another small project I did with a friend. Connecting a led light to a DC motor, which makes the led spin around. On the breadboard we connected two light sensors, which turn two servo motors on and off. Because the LED light spins around they get turned on and off separately. The idea was to recreate a wave, but the DC motor was not strong enough to spin the LED slowly, so the result ended up being more like a thunderstorm.
(better video of this coming soon)

Mixing sound

Preparing for the final exam presentation. Because I can't show all the videos in full length with sound at the same time, I've decided to show the videos all the time, but let the sound switch between videos.

Filming

Jamie XX - Sleep Sound

Bon Iver - Woods

The last couple of weeks I've been making the last two animations/visualizers (there are four in total). Last week it was new moon again, which means it's really dark and perfect to go into the woods and film my projections. I'm now going to montage all the videos and see which visualizations I have to film again.
I hope to be done with editing in 2 weeks, so I can focus on the final presentation. Afterwards I want to make a really short animation in which I explain the concept behind the project. I'm thinking about making a website as well, because I can't show all the films in it's full length at the final presentation (and because I like making websites). I think it would also be nice to show a little bit of an introduction / behind the scenes of the project on the website.

ArtEZ Finals

My work is on the ArtEZ Finals campaign poster. It's really small and cut off, but I still think it's nice that they used my work :p

Testing

For my next visualization, I want to only project an animated line drawing. I'm trying to figure out which part should be interactive with the music.
(The animation should be projected near water, because the deer is drinking from it.
Also, the deer should get some antlers, just because they look awesome.)
